Mumbai: The state on Tuesday witnessed an increase in the number of deaths along with a rise in positive cases. It recorded 51 deaths, the highest in 25 days, taking its Covid-19 toll to 51,857. The last time more than 51 deaths were recorded in a day was on January 29 (56). Maharashtra’s case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.46% continues to be the second-highest in the country. Punjab, with 5,779 deaths, has the highest CFR at 3.23%.
Although the rise in deaths came as a reminder that the pandemic was still around, there was a silver lining for the state. On Tuesday, Maharashtra crossed 2 million recoveries; with the discharge of 5,869 patients, the number of Covid survivors reached 20,05,851. The state’s recovery rate is 95% and 53,409 patients are undergoing treatment. Pune district has the highest active cases (9,399) followed by Nagpur that has beaten Mumbai (6,119) and Thane (6,177) to have the second highest (6,832) number of people under treatment. Amravati has the fifth highest number (5,595).
