With the first Covid-19 vaccine expected to be available early next year, the Punjab government has initiated the process of compiling data of health workers — doctors, MBBS students, nurses, paramedic staff and ASHA workers — who have been identified as the priority group to get the first doses.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier this week promised to first provide the vaccine to frontline health workers once it is available. The required information is being collected from the government and private hospitals, medical colleges, clinics, Ayush hospitals and clinics. As per the estimates of the Punjab chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA), there are about five lakh health workers, including about 10,000 doctors practising allopathic medicine.
