Sharma has been MLA twice from the Naushera constituency. He was elected to the National Conference ticket for the last time in 2008. According to the statement, he joined the Congress with his supporters and expressed confidence in party leadership and policies.
Apart from Sharma, Ashok Bhagat of BSP, who contested from Madha in the assembly elections of 2014, and Anita Gupta, leader of BJP Women's Front from East Jammu and their supporters, also joined the Congress party.
