In Sri Lanka, President Maithripala Sirisena granted pardon to a murderer belonging to a rich and well-known family against whom two prisoners climbed onto the roof of the jail and pleaded for forgiveness from the President for himself. Both prisoners have been sentenced to death. Sirisena had pardoned Jude Jayamaha after which he was released from Velikada jail on Saturday.
During the hearing, the court was told that the victim had 64 fractures in her skull. Jaymaha was initially jailed for 12 years. When he appealed against this conviction, the court extended the sentence to capital punishment, rejecting his appeal. This conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2014 as well.
