Redmi 9 to launch in India today, all you need to know

Thursday, 27 August 2020

Xiaomi will launch a new Redmi smartphone later today in India. The company has already revealed that it will be the Redmi 9. The new Redmi smartphone has also been listed on Amazon India ahead of the launch.

The launch event for Redmi 9 will be a virtual one and it is scheduled to start at 12 PM today. There’s a “notify me” button that users can select to get updates on when the phone becomes official. Xiaomi has so far only confirmed the smartphone’s name and teased highlights of it like big battery, display and fast performance. It also confirmed dual rear cameras and MIUI 12.

Although Xiaomi hasn’t revealed much, there are speculations that the Redmi 9 will be a rebranded version of the Redmi 9A or Redmi 9C. Xiaomi does this with its Redmi phones where it launches them under different monikers in different markets. The original Redmi 9 was launched as Redmi 9 Prime in India. Based on this speculation, Redmi 9 would be the most affordable phone in the series so far. Redmi 9A starts around ₹6,300 while the Redmi 9C costs around ₹7,500 in Malaysia.

The Redmi 9A and Redmi 9C both feature the same 6.53-inch HD+ display, MIUI 11 based on Android 10 and a 5,000mAh battery. One difference is the chipset. Redmi 9C is powered by the MediaTek Helio G35 chipset while the Redmi 9A runs on the Helio G25 chipset. There’s another difference in the camera department as well. On the Redmi 9A you get a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. Redmi 9C offers a triple camera setup with a combination of 13MP+2MP+MP. It however comes with the same 5-megapixel front camera.
